Alternate Hydro Energy Centre (AHEC) was set up at the Institute by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Govt. of India in the year 1982 for imparting training and undertaking R&D work in the field of small hydro-power and other renewable/non-conventional energy sources. The Centre has well equipped laboratories viz., Hydro-mechanical Systems, Computer Aided Design and Information Systems, Control Systems and Bio-mass & Eco-systems. The centre handles consultancy and sponsored projects in the field of small hydro power development and other renewable energy sources and organises short-term training courses to train personnel to design, operate and maintain such power generating systems. The centre offers a Master of Technology (M.Tech.) course in Alternate Hydro Energy Systems. Ph. D. programmes are also offered by AHEC in the field of Alternate Hydro Energy.
The Centre undertakes the work of the preparation of detailed project reports, engineering designs, techno-economic analysis, field execution of small hydro projects, refurbishment of power houses and development of biomass and solar energy systems.
