Hydropower remains the key to unlocking Africa’s energy deficit and economic potential, but despite significant progress, this resource remains largely untapped. Moreover, Africa also struggles with considerable aging hydropower plants and inadequate power infrastructure that require enhanced maintenance and refurbishment so as to meet the region’s growing energy needs.

Africa needs therefore to optimize the operations of its hydropower facilities, integrate and build resilience to climate change, whilst providing flexibility to support variable renewables in the energy mix.

This introduction to asset management course will focus on the fundamentals and concept applications of asset management in hydropower. Developing asset management policies, strategies and systems that support the effective management of hydropower assets will be demonstrated as modelled on the ISO 55000 standards combined with the performance- based maintenance model, optimizing the lifecycle of hydropower infrastructures, whilst ensuring people and equipment safety.
